170 km from the city of Almaty lies one of the most interesting places in Kazakhstan — an object that was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status 15 years ago and the most mysterious monument that has come down to us since the Bronze Age!

The Tambaly Museum-Reserve is more than a hundred monuments in the form of settlements, archaeological and religious buildings and about 3,000 ancient petroglyphs. The archaeological complex embodies the centuries-old history of the Kazakh land and clearly shows the life and culture of a person from the Bronze Age.

The main attraction of Tanbala is a small canyon with thousands of ancient petroglyphs. when viewed from a certain angle, some petroglyphs create a single picture, combining with neighboring stones. This amazing sight come to watch here from all over the Earth.
The size of petroglyphs most often starts from 25 cm and reaches a meter. In neat potholes, you can recognize the silhouettes of wild bulls, kulans, horses and wolves. The most interesting thing is to look at the images of people. Here scenes of battles, dances, hunting, and even scenes with men and women in erotic poses are colorfully depicted.

In the centuries-old history of the development of the culture of Kazakhstan, this monument occupies a special place since in the Bronze Age a person for the first time depicts the image of a visible deity and gives it a human appearance.

The canyon is filled not only with archaeological sites of ancient Kazakhstan, on its slopes there is a huge amount of rare flowers and plants listed in the Red Book, and various representatives of the animal world — snakes, wolves, foxes and hares — live in the gorges.

How to get there?
The Tambaly Museum and Reserve is located 170 km north-west of the city of Almaty, in the south-eastern part of the Chu-Ili mountains.
To get to the monument yourself you need:

— Drive from Almaty towards Kaskelen
— Drive through the village of Targap
— After a few kilometers after the village of Targap turn right
— Drive forward for about 60 km.
