Jet-Oguz Gorge

The slopes of the Terskey Ala-Too ridge are truly rich in magnificent landscapes. We already told you about the favorite gorge of Yuri Gagarin in the previous article. Today we will talk about another, no less famous place.

The Jeti-Oguz gorge is located 28 km west of the city of Karakol, on the northern slope of the Terskey Ala-Too ridge, from the south enveloping Lake Issyk-Kul.

The gorge got its name meaning “seven oxen” or “seven bulls” due to its appearance resembling seven lying bulls. Where is there without a legend telling about the origin of such a name!

Local elders say that, according to legend, two warring khans lived in these places. One was evil and insidious, and the second was good and honest. Once, an evil khan abducts a good wife and asks his advisers what to do with the girl so that the enemy is not in trouble. Advisers tell the khan that the wife of the enemy can be killed and returned to her husband. Such an idea is appealing to the evil khan and he invites everyone to a feast on the day when the girl should die. In honor of this event, subjects of the khan slaughter seven bulls and use the same knife to kill the wife of a good khan. The girl’s blood stains the skins of seven stabbed bulls, which later turn into rocks.

A chain of weathered red rocks attracts the eye and remains in the heart of every tourist and traveler. In 1968, this landscape was even printed on Soviet postage stamps. Seven rocks are the main, but far from the only attraction of the gorge, which spreads as much as 37 km.

Another reason why tourists, especially couples in love, are eager to visit the gorge is the Broken Heart Rock. The rock has long become a real place of pilgrimage for lovers. It is believed that if you confess to each other love at its foot, then love will be strong and, as expected, until death! The shape of the rock really resembles a heart split in two, and in rainy weather red clay stains trickles of water, which makes the rock even more reminiscent of a bleeding heart.

The flora and fauna of the gorge is unique. Tien Shan spruce grows on both sides of the gorge for 25 km, and in warm weather the Jeti-Oguz gorge turns into a real flower paradise! Alpine daisies, asters, and even magnificent edelweiss will appear to your eye and lens. The gorge also boasts the presence of the rarest wildlife. So, in these rocks and in the thick of green foliage snow leopards, mountain goats, bears, roe deer and the rich world of wild birds live!
