By its size, Lake Balkhash occupies an honorable second place among the salt lakes after the Caspian Sea, and on the world map Balkhash is the 14th lake in the list. The area of this giant is 16.5 thousand kilometers, Balkhash spread its waters for as much as 600 km!
The ancient name of the lake “Balyk as” was not in vain attached to the lake, as many as 20 species of fish are found here. Flora and fauna are also quite rich here. The lake provides water for 120 species of birds, of which 12 are listed in the Red Book, and about 60 species of plants.
Balkhash is a lake known throughout Kazakhstan, therefore not only representatives of flora and fauna, but also people are honored to enjoy its beautiful landscapes. Annually, a huge number of people gather at Balkhash, among which there are not only Kazakhstani tourists, but also guests from other countries, participants in various sports events held on the shores of the lake, and even researchers. The presence of the latter is not easy. Due to the irrational use of water by two countries — Kazakhstan and China, there are fears that Balkhash will suffer the fate of the Aral Lake.In defense of Balkhash, Kazakhstanis hold a large number of actions and peaceful protests, urging compatriots and citizens of the «neighboring» country to become prudent and take care of preserving the lake.
Perhaps if the environmental situation in the country does not change, our great-grandchildren will not be able to see Lake Balkhash, but so far it continues to delight us with its deep blue waters, incredible sunsets and even more incredible sunrises! In addition to its indescribable landscapes, Balkhash has another feature — the western basin of the lake is fresh, and the eastern basin consists of salt water. This is extremely rare in nature!
As we have already said, Lake Balkhash is not only a source of water supply, but also one of the most popular tourist sites in Kazakhstan. In summer, they come here in search of a real beach holiday. It even provides various entertainment for vacationers. The shores of Balkhash are not inferior to the shores of foreign lakes and seas!
