Charyn Canyon is one of the most famous canyons of Central Asia. Due to its uniqueness, unimaginable size and beauty, this place gathers a huge number of tourists every year. The canyon is 170 km long, and its steep mountains reach a height of 150-300 m., Forming impenetrable walls of sedimentary rocks, whose age reaches 12 million years. Charyn Canyon is unique not only due to its size, but also its own attractions, which are definitely worth a visit.
The clay washed by the water here forms reliefs resembling incredible castles in their shapes. The length of the “Valley of Castles” is 2 km, and the height of the rocks is as much as 200 m! The “Valley of Castles” has two viewing platforms that offer views of the magical landscapes of the Charyn Canyon.
Like other ancient sights of Kazakhstan, the Charyn Canyon has millions of legends, some of which look like fairy tales, while others are filled with mysticism. In the canyon there is a place that bears the mysterious name «Witch’s tract.» According to legends, hundreds of years ago, in this place, witches arranged their coven, and when the Charyn Canyon became popular among travelers, they drove tourists to the cliffs and dumped them down. Interestingly, this particular section of the route is the most difficult for tourists. Here the road goes into a narrow path, and the wind penetrating the holes of the mountains creates frightening sounds. In addition to the “Witches Gorge”, the Charyn Canyon is popular with such mystical places as “Stone Sack” and “Devil’s Gorge”. There is a myth that one who looks into these two gorges cannot find the way back. Of course, we all know that any legend and a terrible bike has a logical explanation, but this does not cease to make the Charyn Canyon one of the most amazing places.
How to get to the Charyn canyon?
The distance from Almaty to the canyon is about 236 kilometers.
To get to your car you need:
— Drive along the Kuldzhinsky highway 110 km to the city of Chilik
— There will be a big fork in the city
— Here you need to turn right to the village of Bayseyt, there is not a big market and a lot of barbecue.
— After the village of Kokpek at the fork, you need to go straight
— before the Alas pass, turn left, at the sign
— after 8 km you will see a barrier!
